Book Description (Long)
She grew up in the shadow of a mystery. Will new information lead her to a peace she never thought possible?
Teresa Newton-Terres never knew her dad. Losing him when she was only two, she lived with unresolved grief for almost fifty years. But when a dusty scrapbook hidden by her grandmother lands on her doorstep, she plunges into an abyss to uncover the story.
In 1960, an eminent physicist and six other men including Newton-Terres’ father left on a covert Raytheon-related underwater communications experiment. They never returned, and their converted landing craft, The Marie, vanished. After learning only four bodies were recovered and her father’s not among them, Newton-Terres kept a flicker of hope alive.
In a passionate search that exposes black-ops secrecy and classified red tape, this courageous book reveals how a U.S. defense project coverup still has lasting repercussions for all the affected families. Showcasing careful forensic research and impeccable attention to detail, Newton-Terres offers a deep dive into her fearless quest for the truth and the inner joy she found.

QUESTION: Tell us about MYSTERY OF THE MAIRE and Teresa Newton-Terres?
ANSWER: Everyone has family secrets or, at the very least, some unresolved childhood event or tragedy. Not everyone’s includes a shipwreck, submarine, and kidnapping. These can make you feel unanchored, adrift, or caught in a whirlpool of emotions with unanswered questions!
I wrote a memoir, MYSTERY OF THE MARIE, about how my childhood tragedy surfaces a Cold War secret. While everyone has family secrets, not everyone’s includes a shipwreck, a submarine or a kidnapping.
QUESTION: What about it makes it a quest?
ANSWER: Every quest begins with a question. My quest began when I opened up a scrapbook of my grandmother’s that was hidden and sent to me. Opening it reminded me of the question I’d had as long as I could remember: What Happened to my father? Because all I knew was that he had disappeared.
QUESTION: Disappeared? What do you mean “disappeared”?
ANSWER: The ship disappeared. The life boat disappeared. Three men disappeared — Four victims bodies eventually were found. The three victims that were never found included – the scientist, my dad (an engineer and scuba diver) and the captain of the MARIE.
QUESTION: You have my attention, tell me more?
ANSWER: The question –what happened to my father— includes, the question of what happened to the MARIE, a vessel. A WWII Landing Craft, 42ft, that was converted for sporting (civilian) use. The MARIE departed from Santa Barbara California’s harbor with a crew of seven men, including a scientist, engineers, scuba divers, to include my father. These seven brave men were never seen alive again. The MARIE departed at sunrise and disappeared June 7, 1960.
QUESTION: On page 85 it shows you with your family – three brothers, you, your mother and grandparents. You were so young!
ANSWER: I was two years old when my father disappeared. I grew up in a time period where children were to be seen and not _____ (heard), speak only when _______ (spoken to), where Father knows ______ (best), and loose lips _____ (sinks ships). So did we ever talk about the ship that sunk my father? Not a chance!
QUESTION: How did this impact you growing up?
ANSWER: I was angry because I remember my mother escaping up to her families cabin in the mountains. I was angry because she didn’t go rescue my father. How crazy is that! No matter how beautiful anyone’s family photo looks, we all wrestle with loss, suffering, and sometimes, unsolved mysteries. As you mature and grow in self awareness, you revisit childhood mysteries with adult perspective.
QUESTION: Tell me about your investigations into the mystery?
ANSWER: As an adult, finding answers to my father’s disappearance was the only item on my bucket list.
As I mentioned, I was two years old when the MARIE and dad disappeared. The other fatherless children were young too and we all grew up… it wasn’t until I was in my forties that the scrapbook of my grandmother’s was located and sent to me. The story that I read about in its pages surfaced deep emotions… and resulted in more questions.
The search to understand what happened resulted in a confusing rollercoaster of emotions. This is when I learned about the cycle of feelings about grief and the grief process – denial, anger, depression, testing for meaning, etc. Going the distance, I have greater peace, passion, and perspective because I’ve processed through the emotions and feelings related to my childhood events.
The search to understand what happened resulted because, as was my training as a PMP, I accessed my resources. Mentors showed up like a host of retired-Raytheon Engineers who worked with the men lost on the MARIE. Mentors enlightened me to resources like using the FOIA system and the NARA system. Another mentor, a Retired Coast Guard Captain, helped me to understand and de-code the 1960 SAR documents and locate a coastie who was on the boat searching for the Marie and my dad. Other mentors showed me the value in recording people’s memories, and so I interviewed anyone with a story to tell about the Marie. All the stories combined revealed a deeper, more mysterious story.
QUESTION: Reading about your perseverance was an inspiration! What kept you going?
ANSWER: With my grandmother’s scrapbook, I felt as if my grandmother and my grandfather were handing over to me the story mysteries. I had mentors who offered insight and encouragement along the way. And using my professional and personal skill set, resolving what I could of the story became my destiny. And I sought to trust that I’d find my purpose in the journey.
QUESTION: Unbelievable, after all these years the government still classifies this event as a “Black Project”?
ANSWER: Yes. A military historian relayed to me, “It was a black project then, it’s a black project still” (WPAFB). And assuming my research and interpretation is correct, in the story (using original sources), I piece together a public search and rescue AND I discovered a secret search and rescue. A public mission. A secret mission. These missions intersect by one min. And in the secret mission, something was rescued! What was rescued I can only speculate (Device? Dad? Scientist?) because it’s all still in the “BLACK”.
QUESTION: 1960 was a long time ago. I thought everything declassified after a certain timeframe?
ANSWER: At first, that is what I understood. Because of the mentors that came alongside me, I now understand that what I seek has to do with Military Science Technology and Information Systems (STINFO). Apparently, unless policy changes, I may never resolve the mysteries of the MARIE.
QUESTION: The ending in the book is so uplifting and inspiring, tell us about this?
ANSWER: As you know, the story concludes with the 50th Commemoration where over a weekend we remember and honor the 1960 events in a social, a ceremony, and a sunrise boat ride ceremony. On the wreath laying boat ride, dolphins as far as the eye could see showed up and encircled the boat filled with family and friends and among them are three whales that didn’t want to leave us. It was healing and spiritual. To this day, the memory brings chill-bumps!
QUESTION: What has been the most rewarding aspect of your quest?
ANSWER: All the TREASURES that I’ve collected along the way! I have lasting friendships, a documentary, a weekend commemoration, a museum exhibit. The network of people who hold a piece of the story that are now connected includes: families, friends, retired Raytheon engineers, Coast Guard, Air Force, Navy, Historians, Archivist, NOAA, SB Maritime Museum, etc. AND because of this, I gained courage serving things that matter most, I became grateful where I had a chip on my shoulder, and I’ve gained peace where I was frustrated. And for all the unresolved questions, I found a place of rest as I put my trust in God. And that is why I wrote MYSTERY OF THE MARIE. Yet, another TREASURE!
QUESTION: Who does the story resonate with?
ANSWER: Mystery of the Marie is a memoir that connects national news events from June 1960 to an intimate personal story in modern times. Those who like government intrigue, captivating suspense, and a brave crusader for truth, will enjoy this untold true story.
QUESTION: So what’s next?
ANSWER: I’m inviting everyone to celebrate, honor, and buy the MYSTERY OF THE MARIE and help surface the truth today … because it’s an ongoing treasure hunt for me and without interest little else will be de-classified.
QUESTION: Where can people learn more?
