MARIE REMEMBERED
(MARIE REMEMBERED – Seven men expanding the art of infrared, Documentary 19min) Created for the first-ever gathering at the 50th anniversary)
The MARIE EVENT occurred during the height of the Cold War, a period in history that still holds many mysteries spanning 1940-1990.
A reality, facing fears of a nuclear Pearl Harbor.
“When you align the Cold War era, the milestones of Cold War Projects and National Security interests, and the ongoing influence on the ‘Art of the Field’ that Dr. Niel Freeborn Beardsley referred to as his work, and the ongoing revelations surfacing today …. it seems to me, that the Marie Event is understood by way of the Cold War historical timeline,” Teresa Newton-Terres.
Insight into the timeframe with its challenges both nationally and globally echo in Theodore H. White words in The Making of a President 1960: “In the Spring of 1960 a series of world events beat like a fusillade on the minds of American citizens: the shooting down of the U-2 over Russia; the use of this incident by Premier Khrushchev to disrupt the Summit conference in Paris; our deteriorating relations with Fidel Castro; arriving at total hostility as the bearded maniac appropriated American interests in Cuba; the humiliation of President Eisenhower on being excluded from Japan on his good-will tour of the Far East; and finally, the savage turbulence in the Congo that might tear the United Nations apart.”
“I consider these men (Lost on the MARIE) as being as worthy of hero stature as the pilot of the U-2 planes because even though they did not know that their lives were in danger, they did die while undertaking a project to help ensure the safety of the free world.”
Markham Field MacLin, SB News Press, 17 June 1960

The Cold War Museum https://coldwar.org/
The Cold War Museum was founded in 1996 by Francis Gary Powers Jr., son of the famed U-2 Pilot, and John Welch to honor Cold War veterans, preserve Cold War history, and educate future generations about the Cold War and its legacy.
The National Cold War Center Https://nationalcoldwarcenter.com
The National Cold War Center is a federally designated museum that will be located on the campus of the former Blytheville Air Force Base (known initially as the Blytheville Army Airfield), which opened in 1942 as a training facility for World War II pilots. In 1958, the base was converted to a Strategic Air Command alert mission. It remained a key U.S. military command for three decades – through events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the signing of the treaties officially ending the Cold War in the early 1990s. The NCWC is targeting a grand opening date in the fall of 2027. Once open, the NCWC will serve as the United States’ official museum of the Cold War.
